CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Darlins of the Reguladores Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club helped strengthen local breast cancer prevention and patient support programs with their contribution of $22,000 today at a press event at CHRISTUS Spohn’s Cancer Center. The contribution, net proceeds from the 5th Annual Bikers for Boobs fundraiser held in October, was split equally between the American Cancer Society’s Pat McNeil Coastal Bend Breast Prosthesis Program and First Friday providing free mammograms to women who could not afford them due to lack of insurance or limited finances
“The Pat McNeil Coastal Bend Breast Prosthesis Program provides custom fitted prostheses and two mastectomy bras for breast cancer survivors,” stated Lindsey Johnson, executive director for the American Cancer Society. “With support from organizations like the Reguladores, this vital program continues to be available for breast cancer survivors in our community. Bikers for Boobs helps the American Cancer Society raise awareness of these programs and reach out to as many people as possible. The American Cancer Society thanks everyone who helped make this event a success,” Johnson added.
Barbara Little, First Friday committee chair accepted the donation on behalf of the organization. "We are very honored and thankful to have the support and friendship of the Reguladores,” said Little. “With their donations in the past three years, they have provided 330 screening mammograms to women. This is tremendous!! We thank them for helping us achieve our mission to create awareness of the importance of early detection, to help save lives, and to provide free mammograms to women in need,” Little added.
According to Lisa Smith, Bikers for Boobs event chairperson, “this is the fifth year the Darlin's of the Reguladores have hosted Bikers for Boobs. We would like to thank our sponsors, fellow motorcycle clubs, and our Coastal Bend community for their generous donations of money and time.” She added, “We are pleased to donate the proceeds to our local ACS and First Friday to help them continue their missions of breast cancer education, prevention, and recovery.”
Since 2003, the annual Bikers for Boobs fundraiser has raised $104,000, providing vital funding for cancer prevention and patient support for Coastal Bend residents.
Implemented in July 2005, the American Cancer Society’s Pat McNeil Coastal Bend Breast Prosthesis Program has served nearly 200 women. Since its inception in 1994, First Friday has supplied close to 11,000 free mammograms to South Texas women who could not afford them.
More than 250 motorcyclists from around the State registered for the benefit motorcycle run which included a decorated bike contest, memorial wall, quilt raffle, cookbook sale, club challenge, live auction and barbecue.
The Reguladores Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club was founded in Corpus Christi in 2001 for peace officers, their families and friends with no restrictions on motorcycle brands, sex, race, or religion. The Club’s goal is to generate an increased level of enthusiasm for riding motorcycles, while supporting other clubs, promoting safe activities and assisting non-profit organizations through fundraising or volunteerism.
