Bikers for Boobs 2008

Motorcyclists to Ride for
Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention

September 24 2008 – More than 250 motorcyclists from Corpus Christi and around the State are expected to ride in the 6th Annual Bikers for Boobs fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Pat McNeil Coastal Bend Breast Prosthesis program and FIRST FRIDAY, CHRISTUS SPOHN’s breast care program. The event, scheduled for Saturday, October 4th, is hosted by the Darlins of the Reguladores Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club – CC Chapter.

The Darlins, many of them breast cancer survivors or having lost loved ones to the disease, decided five years ago to create Bikers for Boobs to raise awareness and prevention to the devastating effects of breast cancer. The fundraiser begins with a benefit motorcycle run starting at 10:00 a.m. with registration at Corpus Christi Harley Davidson located at 502 South Padre Island Drive. The run will end with last bike in at 4:00 p.m. at Knuckleheads, located at 819 North Upper Broadway, and where the other activities will begin. Participants can enjoy delicious South Texas barbecue plates for a $5.00 donation, 50/50 raffle, door prizes, vendors, live auction, and live entertainment.

Since 2003, the annual Bikers for Boobs fundraiser has raised $104,000, providing vital funding for cancer education and patient support for Coastal Bend residents. All proceeds remain here in South Texas.

The Pat McNeil Coastal Bend Breast Prosthesis Program provides custom fitted prostheses and two mastectomy bras for breast cancer survivors. Since its beginning in July 2005, the program has provided assistance to over 300 women. “With support from organizations like the Reguladores LEMC, this vital program continues to be available for breast cancer survivors in our community,” says Lindsey Johnson, American Cancer Society’s executive director. “Bikers for Boobs helps the American Cancer Society raise awareness for this program and reach out to as many people as possible. The American Cancer Society thanks everyone who helps make this event a success!"

Since its inception in 1994, FIRST FRIDAY has supplied nearly 13,000 free mammograms to South Texas women who could not afford them. This year to date, 650 mammograms have been provided.
